ARTIST
EYESCREAM ~ Dynamic jewelry to inspire your muse. Handcrafted one-of-a-kind works of wearable art by artist Ruby Smith. Creating esoteric gothic talismans, ornate adornments, and dark art, Ruby implements various techniques and mediums to bring her creations to life, crafting them in moonlight while most of the world sleeps. Her process begins with selecting a stone or drawing inspiration from dreams, often re-shaping the stone for use in her designs. Some pieces are sculpted, hand-painted, or intricately wire-wrapped, then embellished with beads, bones, fossils, and other curiosities, and finished with a polished look or darkened patina. Whatever the technique or material, Ruby presents her art to the world with undying love.
JOURNEY
Creation and ornamentation are deeply rooted in Ruby’s life. Her grandparents provided a stable sanctuary filled with music and art. Her grandfather was a skilled woodworker and cabinet maker as well as a trumpet player, singer and jazz aficionado, while her grandmother was a legendary collector whose entire bedroom was dedicated to jewelry as well as being a crafty ornament maker. One year when times were more difficult, her grandmother crafted intricate seed bead chokers to sell to neighbors, passing down a fierce independent survival spirit along with her obsession for adornment.
At just three years old, Ruby crafted and sold her first handmade ornament at her grandmothers booth in the church basement holiday sale. That early spark led to her first formal jewelry line showcase in 1989 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s annual student holiday showcase. She later launched the original EYESCREAM website in 1998, and finally realized a lifelong dream by opening her physical brick-and-mortar storefront and studio in Oakland in May 2014.
"I really love what I do and believe each creation has a destiny of its own, meant for one special person. When that person finds their piece, it's truly magical." ~Ruby~
